Women in the Board Room

    Hey ladies!

I was browsing the local DC area group womenintechnology.org, and they released a report showing slow but continued growth in women's representation on corporate boards in the region from about 8 percent in 2010 to 14.7 percent in 2017.  However, their concluding abstract states:
"This year's WIT report shows that growth has continued to be extremely slow in terms of increasing board gender diversity, with less than 1% increase over 2016. Women remain underrepresented on corporate boards, and mandatory director retirement ages may play an important role in the increase of women's presence on corporate boards."

Question: Are any of the women in this group on a board (any kind: non-profit, corporate, etc.)?

    Report is here: http://www.womenintechnology.org/assets/docs/WIT_Research_Report_2017.pdf?platform=hootsuite

Well, I am on the D365UG|AXUG Board of Advisors. I am also on the National Advisory Board for NetGain Technologies, a local IT services company.

In my prior role of HR Manager, I served on the Louisville Society of Human Resources Management (LSHRM) Board of Directors as the Director of Communication and Technology for a year as well.

Several people in my company are represented on many different Boards and Committees. It's definitely encouraged, and I feel that it makes us a better company for it. We can see what other companies are doing, make meaningful connections, and really bring good ideas back to our company!

I am on the DSLUG Board.  We have several women on our Board.  I took the position as a personal stretch project, since public speaking is not my strong-point and this position would require some.

@Kelly Kane @Jennifer Pippin That's awesome! It also sounds like your employer supports you being on boards for professional development (which Dynamic Communities REALLY appreciates - thanks!) - which I think is also key.

I've joined an advisory council on one of our tech vendors so that I can get a good feel and maybe direct where that product is going, and a key part of that is having the support of my boss to spend time in that way.

For the ladies on this thread that haven't joined a board, do you think it's a lack of time or support (or both)?

When I think board room, I think CEO and COO's.  I guess I just really don't know what opportunities are out there.

I have not served on a board and I'm not even sure how to go about getting on a board.  My assumption was that you either get asked to serve or you need to be elected. Can you research boards, find one that interests you, and ask to join? I'd love to hear some feedback on how it works.

Yay @Leanne Paul! If you find yourself involved/volunteering in an organization that you are passionate about, peak online to see what their volunteer opportunities and just ask how their board gets elected. It's funny, every association I've ever worked with always say they want to see MORE applications come in when board positions open.
